According to CCTV5 program list (February 1, 2024), the European Cup is a grand event of European football, held every four years, bringing together the 24 strongest national teams in Europe to fight for the glory of European champions. The European Cup was originally scheduled to be held in 2020, but it was postponed to this year because of the impact of the new coronal epidemic. At the same time, in order to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the European Cup, the tournament has adopted a tour competition system without a single host country, which will be held in 12 European cities respectively. The semi-finals and finals will be held at Wembley Stadium in London. So, what are the rules of the European Cup? Here's an introduction.
The competition system of the European Cup is divided into two stages, group match and knockout match. In the group stage, the 24 teams are divided into six groups, four teams in each group. The single round robin system is adopted, and each team plays three games. In each game, the team that wins gets 3 points, the team that draws gets 1 point, and the team that loses gets 0 point. After the group game, the first two teams of each group and the third team of the four best teams will be 16 teams in total and will be promoted to the knockout stage.
If there are two or more teams with the same points in the group stage, the teams that qualify will be determined in the following order: 1. ranking of the winning and losing relationship between each other; 2. The goal difference ranking of each other; 3. Teams that have scored many goals away from home; 4. Teams with more goal difference in group matches; 5. Teams with more goals in group matches; 6. Teams with better performance in fair competition (i.e. the number of red and yellow cards, 3 points for red cards and 1 point for yellow cards); 7. The higher ranked team of UEFA.
In the knockout phase, 16 teams are divided into eight groups, and the single game knockout system is adopted. The winner is promoted and the loser is eliminated. If the two sides are tied within 90 minutes, a 30 minute overtime match will be held. If the overtime match is still tied, a penalty shoot out will be held until the outcome is decided. The knockout phase includes the eighth final, quarter final, semi-final and final, with a total of 15 games, and the final winner of the European Cup.
