The competition system of the European Cup is divided into two stages, group match and knockout match. In the group stage, 24 teams were divided into six groups, four teams in each group. Each team played a game with the other three teams in the group. The winning team scored 3 points, the drawing team scored 1 point, and the losing team scored 0 point. After the group game, the score ranking of each group shall be determined according to the following principles:

• Those with multiple points rank top;
• If the points are the same, the players with more than one goal difference will be ranked first;
• If the goal difference is the same, the players with more than one total goal will be ranked higher;
• If the total goals are the same, compare them in the order of points, goal difference, total goals, number of red and yellow cards and the ranking of UEFA national teams, until the scores are higher or lower.

In the knockout phase, the top two teams of each group and the third team of the four teams with the best results, a total of 16 teams, enter the knockout phase. The knockout matches include the 1/8 final, the 1/4 final, the semi-final and the final. Each game lasts for 90 minutes. If the game is drawn, a 30 minute overtime game will be played. If the game is still drawn in overtime, a penalty shoot out will be played until the outcome is decided. The winner of the knockout contest will advance to the next round, and the loser will be eliminated.
