The 2020 European Cup was originally planned to be held in 2020, but due to the impact of the new championship epidemic, UEFA postponed the game to this year. At the same time, in order to commemorate the 60th year of the European Cup, UEFA will use the tour without a single host country to hold the tournament in 12 European cities, and the semi-finals and finals will be held at Wembley Stadium in London. The other 11 cities will have 3 group matches and 1 knockout match. A total of 24 teams from 55 European Football Association member countries participated in the competition, 20 of which were advanced through the preliminary contest and 4 through the play offs.
In order to cope with the impact of the new Champions League, UEFA has formulated a series of competition systems and rules to ensure the smooth and fair competition. Here are some main rules:
- The number of players in each team has increased from 23 to 26, but the number of players in each game is still only 23, including 3 goalkeepers. The purpose of this is to give the team more choices to deal with possible injuries and infections.
- The number of substitutions in each game increased from 3 to 5, but only in 3 periods, excluding the intermission. The purpose of this is to reduce the physical burden of players to cope with the intensive schedule.
- If a team is unable to send at least 8 players to participate in the game due to the new Champions League, the game will be postponed to 48 hours later, or on another date designated by UEFA. If a team is still unable to send at least 8 players to participate in the game, the game will be canceled and the team will be sentenced to lose the game 0-3, unless UEFA believes that the team is not responsible or there are other special circumstances.
- If all the goalkeepers of a team are unable to participate in the game due to the outbreak of the new Champions League, the team can choose a goalkeeper from the players outside the list, or borrow a goalkeeper from other teams, provided that UEFA approves.
- If a match cannot be held in the original city or date due to the outbreak of the new Champions League, UEFA can arrange the match to be held in another city or date, or cancel the match, and judge the result of the match according to the specific situation.
UEFA said that these competition systems and rules are to ensure the health and safety of players and fans, as well as to ensure the fairness and integrity of the game. UEFA also called on all participants to comply with local epidemic prevention measures, minimize travel and contact, and conduct regular testing of new champions. Uefa hopes that this European Cup can bring joy and unity to fans all over Europe at this special time.
