The European Cup is a grand event of European football, which is held every four years and attracts hundreds of millions of fans around the world. The 2024 European Cup will be held in Germany, and a total of 24 teams will participate in the competition. Among them, 21 teams will be qualified through the European qualifiers, and the other three teams will be decided through the play offs. So, how did the European Cup play off places come into being?

The number of places for the European Cup play offs is closely related to the League of European Nations. UEFA is a new event launched by UEFA in 2018, which aims to improve the competitiveness and enjoyment of national teams and increase participation in the European Cup and the World Cup. The League of European Nations is divided into four levels, each level is divided into four groups, each group has three to four teams. The group champions at each level will be eligible for the European Cup play off. If these teams have been promoted through the European qualifiers, the quota will be extended to the second place in the group at that level, and so on.

The results of the UEFA will determine the grouping and schedule of the play offs. The play offs will be drawn at the end of the European qualifiers and will be divided into three groups, each with four teams. The four teams in each group will be ranked according to the results of the European League. The team ranking first will play against the team ranking fourth in the semi-finals, and the team ranking second will play against the team ranking third. The winner of the semi-final will enter the final, and the winner of the final will be eligible for the European Cup. The home court of the play off will be determined in advance by drawing lots, and each game is a single round system.

According to the results of the UEFA 2022/23 season, 12 teams have been determined to participate in the play off, including:

Grade A: Poland and Wales

Level B: Israel, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland, Ukraine, Iceland

Level C: Georgia, Greece, Kazakhstan, Luxembourg

Level D: Estonia

Some of these teams are regular visitors of the European Cup, such as Poland, Wales, Iceland, etc., some are new faces of the European Cup, such as Israel, Kazakhstan, Estonia, etc., and some are old friends of the European Cup, such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Turkey, etc. These teams all have different styles and characteristics, have different dreams and expectations, and have different difficulties and challenges. They will compete fiercely in the play off in March 2024, for their country and honor, for their fans and dreams, for their history and future, and for their trip to the European Cup.

The schedule of the European Cup play off is as follows:

Semifinals – Group C: Georgia (1) vs Luxembourg (4), Greece (2) vs Kazakhstan (3)

Semifinals – Group B: Israel (1) vs Finland/Ukraine/Iceland (4), Bosnia and Herzegovina (2) vs Finland/Ukraine/Iceland (3)
