The highest honor of European football, the Champions League, has been the dream of fans and clubs all over the world since the first Champions League in 1955. However, with the development of European football and the intensification of competition, the Champions League is also facing some disputes and challenges. Recently, UEFA announced the reform plan for the 2024-25 Champions League, which triggered heated discussion and opposition from all parties.
According to the new match system plan 123 officially released by UEFA, from the 2024-25 season, the Champions League will be expanded to 36 teams, and 4 more teams will have the opportunity to compete with the best clubs in Europe. Under the new competition system, each team will participate in four more games than the current group match in the preliminary stage of the main match. They do not play two rounds of home and away matches with three opponents in groups as in the past. Instead, 10 opponents will play 10 games in a large group of 36 teams, half of which are home and half are away. This also gives clubs the opportunity to play against more opponents, and also gives fans the opportunity to see more frequent confrontations.
How will the additional 4 teams be allocated? The new Champions League will still set up the qualification match 12345, and the qualification of the club depends on the final ranking of the club in the domestic league last season. The four extra seats in the 2024-25 season will be allocated according to three criteria.
- If the European War coefficient ranks fifth or above, the association 12 will get an additional seat. Each association (including the English Premier League, Spanish League, Italian League, German League, French League, Spanish League B, Spanish League C, etc.) has a coefficient value of 12, which is calculated comprehensively based on the fact that its clubs have won trophies or entered the top eight (including) associations ranking fifth or above in the European War coefficient in the past five or fifteen (including) years.
- Among the associations that have not been directly promoted to the fifth place or above in the European coefficient ranking (including), 12, the domestic league champion of the association with the highest European coefficient ranking (including) will win an additional seat.
- Of all the associations (including) that fail to rank fifth or above in the coefficient of European competition in 2024-25, 12 clubs with the highest coefficient of European competition (including) will each get a seat.
