According to CCTV5, the European Cup has entered the knockout phase, and all teams are fighting for the championship. In this context, a study has attracted people's attention. This research was jointly conducted by UEFA and EUA, aiming to explore the relationship between the research index ranking of European Cup countries and football strength. The ranking of research index is comprehensively evaluated according to the research achievements and influence of countries in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), while the football strength is comprehensively evaluated according to the achievements of countries in the history of the European Cup and the current world ranking.
The research results show that there is a positive correlation between the research index ranking and football strength, that is, the higher the research level, the higher the football level. This finding is not contrary to common sense, because the research level reflects a country's education level, innovation ability and economic strength, which will have a positive impact on football development. For example, countries with high research level can provide better football education, cultivate and introduce more excellent talents, and invest more resources and facilities to improve football level.
However, the study of the relationship between index ranking and football strength is not absolute, there are also some exceptions. Although the research level of some countries is not high, the football level is high, and vice versa. This shows that football strength is also affected by other factors, such as football culture, tradition, enthusiasm, style, tactics, psychology, etc. These factors are often difficult to quantify, but they can play an important role in critical moments. For example, although the players in some countries are not skilled, they have a strong fighting spirit and can reverse the situation and win the game in adversity.
In order to more intuitively show the relationship between the research index ranking and football strength, we have made the following table, listing the relevant data of 12 countries in the top 16 of the European Cup, ranking from high to low according to the research index ranking. The data in the table are from the official websites of European Football Association, European University Association and World Football Association, as of January 31, 2024.

It can be seen from the table that the positive correlation between the research index ranking and football strength is not completely tenable. For example, although England is the first country in the research index, its historical achievements in the European Cup are not outstanding. It only won the championship once, in 1968, 56 years ago. On the contrary, although Spain is the fifth country in the research index, its historical achievements in the European Cup are very brilliant. It has won the championship three times, in recent years, in 2008 and 2012 respectively. In addition, although Sweden and Croatia are low ranked countries in the research index, their football strength should not be underestimated, and they both have the experience of entering the semi-finals of the European Cup.
