According to CCTV5 program list (January 20, 2024), the European Cup is one of the most watched football events in the world. It is held every four years and attracts hundreds of millions of fans around the world. The European Cup will open in Germany on June 11, and 24 teams will compete for the glory of the European championship. So how did these teams qualify for the European Cup? What is the competition system of the European Cup? Let's take a look.
The teams participating in the European Cup are produced through two stages of competition, namely the preliminary match and the play off match. The qualifying match is to select 20 teams from 55 European countries and regions to directly qualify for the European Cup through group matches. The play off game is to select 16 teams from the achievements of the European League of Nations, carry out the knockout match, and finally produce 4 teams to qualify for the European Cup. In addition, Germany, the host country, automatically gets a place in the tournament, so a total of 25 teams will participate in the European Cup.
The competition system of the European Cup is divided into two stages, namely group match and knockout match. The group game is to divide 25 teams into 6 groups, 5 teams in each group, and play a single round robin game. Each team plays 4 games. The scoring rules of the group match are: 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 point for a loss. After the group game, 16 teams, including the first and second teams of each group and the third team of the four best teams, will advance to the knockout stage.
The knockout match starts from the top 16 and starts with a single knockout match according to the preset match map. If the two teams are tied within 90 minutes, a 30 minute overtime match will be held. If the overtime match is still tied, a penalty shoot out will be held until the winner is decided. The schedule of the knockout matches is: the last 16, the last 8, the semi-final and the final, and finally the winner of the European Cup.
The ranking of the European Cup is determined according to the team's performance in the game. If two or more teams have the same points, their ranking will be compared in the following order: goal difference, goals, fair competition points (3 points deducted for red card, 1 point deducted for yellow card), and UEFA ranking. If two teams meet in the last round of the group match, and the points, goal difference, number of goals, and fair competition points are all the same, then their ranking will be determined through a penalty shoot out.
Although the competition system of the European Cup seems somewhat complicated, it is actually to ensure the fairness and intensity of the game, so that each team can have the opportunity to show their strength, and so that fans can enjoy more exciting games. The European Cup will be broadcast live on CCTV5.
