According to CCTV5 program list (January 8, 2024), the European Cup qualifiers have entered the final stage, and 24 teams will be determined by the end of this month. The qualification rules of the European Cup qualifiers have changed. In addition to the first two of the 12 groups directly qualified, there are four places determined by the four level champions of the national league. This means that some teams with weak strength also have the opportunity to participate in the European Cup, which increases the competitiveness and interest of the European Cup.
The National League is a new event launched by UEFA in 2018, which aims to replace the traditional friendly games and improve the quality and enjoyment of matches between national teams. The National League is divided into four levels, each level is divided into four groups, each group has three to four teams. The first place in the group of each level will be promoted to a higher level, and the last place in the group will be demoted to a lower level. The first team of each level will also be eligible for a play off of the European Cup qualifiers. If they have passed the regular qualifiers, this qualification will be extended to the next team of that level.
The play off of the European Cup qualifiers will be held in March next year, and the four teams at each level will carry out the semi-final and final knockout matches to determine a place for the European Cup. In this way, there will be a team at each level participating in the European Cup, ensuring the diversity and inclusiveness of the European Cup. At present, the four level champions of the National League are: Switzerland at Level A, Ukraine at Level B, Scotland at Level C and Georgia at Level D. They will compete with other national league teams for the last four places in the European Cup.
