On June 11, 2021, the European Football Championship (hereinafter referred to as the European Cup) will open at the Olympic Stadium in Rome, which is a grand event of European football and an important event after the epidemic. The European Cup was originally scheduled to be held in 2020, but due to the impact of COVID-19, it was postponed to 2021, and the original name was retained. [1]
This European Cup has 24 teams participating, which is a new rule implemented since 2016, 8 more than the previous 16 teams. These teams are qualified through preliminary matches and play offs, including European football powers and emerging forces, as well as some teams that have reached the finals for the first time. [2]
The 24 teams were divided into 6 groups, and each group had 4 teams, from Group A to Group F. Each group will have a single round robin game, and each team will play three games. The teams with the top two points and the third team of the four best groups will advance to the knockout phase. The knockout matches include the top 16, the top 8, the semi-finals and the finals. The single match knockout system is adopted. If the match is leveled within 90 minutes, a 30 minute overtime match will be held. If the overtime match is still leveled, a penalty shoot out will be held. [3]
Another feature of this European Cup is that there is no fixed host country. Instead, the European Football Federation has selected 12 stadiums in 11 cities as the venues, namely Rome, London, Munich, Baku, St. Petersburg, Amsterdam, Seville, Bucharest, Copenhagen, Glasgow, Budapest and Paris. This is to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the European Cup and also to show the diversity and unity of European football. [4]
